How to Change a Lamy Fountain Pen Nib
The thought of changing the nib on your beloved Lamy fountain pen can seem intimidating. It might even seem like a recipe for disaster that will bend or break your nib. But changing your nib is incredibly easy and will let you try out the range of different nib sizes that Lamy offers. We’ll show you two foolproof methods for replacing your Lamy nib, one with tape and the other with rubber grip liner. In this guide, we’ll be switching from an Extra Fine to Medium nib on a Lamy Safari Fountain Pen. These methods will work with the Lamy Safari, Al-Star, Vista, and Joy.
How to Change Your Lamy Nib with Tape
One of the easiest ways to change a Lamy nib is to use a piece of tape. This method works best when your nib is dry. Strong, sticky tapes like packing tape are best because they are less likely to tear. You can use gloves to protect your hands and a piece of scratch paper to line your desk in case ink spills.
Clean ink traces from your nib.
1. Begin by gently cleaning ink traces from your pen with a damp cloth or tissue.
Apply tape to the nib.
2. After the nib is dry, apply a single piece of adhesive tape to the nib. You won’t need a lot—an inch or two should be sufficient.
Pull the tape downwards to remove the nib.
3. Gently remove the nib from the pen by pulling the tape downwards.
Clean the removed nib.
4. Clean the removed nib with warm water. We don’t recommend using undiluted soap or any other harsh cleaning agents since such chemicals may damage the nib. Use a tissue to gently dry off the nib. Be cautious when you’re washing and drying your nib so that you don’t bend the tines.
Replace the nib.
5. Slide on your desired nib. Make sure that the side with the lettering is facing you and secured above the flat side of the feed.
How to Change Your Lamy Nib with a Rubber Grip Liner
Changing your Lamy Fountain Pen nib with a piece of rubber grip liner is also very easy. This is a convenient method if your nib is wet and tape will not adhere to it properly. As with the tape method, you can keep your hands and desk tidy by using gloves to protect your hands and a sheet of paper to line your desk.
Cut a piece of rubber grip liner.
1. Cut out a piece of rubber grip liner. A 2” x 6” rectangle will be sufficient.
Fold the rubber grip liner in half.
2. Fold the rubber grip liner in half over the nib.
Place your index finger and thumb around the sides of the nib.
3. Carefully place your index finger and thumb around the sides of the nib with the liner over it.
Pull the nib off.
4. Pull the nib off gently.
Replace the nib.
5. Slide on your desired nib. Make sure that the side with the lettering is facing you and secured above the flat side of the feed.
