Artist Highlight – Eric Merced

Each month JetPens likes to highlight a customer who is also an artist that uses JetPens products. This month we are happy to feature Eric Merced.

Eric Merced is a professional Comic Book Artist with over 10 years of experience. With roots in traditional media, he has since become a full digital Artist working with industry standard software and hardware to create his Comics. He’s worked for companies like Zondervan Publishing, Upper Deck, Marvel, Archie’s and IDW, and licensed characters like The Greatest American Hero and Voltron. His experience ranges from Penciling, Inking, Coloring and Lettering, as well as Character Design and Masterhead Design and Illustration. You can view more of his work at EricMerced.com and on Twitter @eric_merced.

Give us a little insight as to how you use our JetPens products in your illustrations.

When I work on my art traditionally, there are 3 pens I use every time. The first one of the trio is the Kuretake No. 13 Brush Pen. I was introduced to this pen by an Artist on Twitter and snatched one up from Jet Pens. First time trying it I was instantly hooked. You can say it was something like love at first brush or stroke. lol.

The second pen is the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. What the Pentel pen has over the Kuretake is that the ink is much darker and water proof. What I like about the Kuretake over the Pentel is that I can refill the Kuretake with any ink of my choosing. But both really create the line I’m looking for when inking my work. It’s also good to note that I’m very picky when it comes to my lines. They have to look and feel right and I find that these 3 pens give me exactly what I’m looking for. The final pen is the Kaimei Brush Pen (a gift from Jetpens!). This is sort of a back up pen. In case for whatever reason I can’t use the first two. But also, I don’t use it regularly because I still have to find a converter for it that will fit it’s small body and allow me to use my own ink in it.

I have some really good brushes which I use to fill in heavy areas of black but while I can easily use them to draw my lines, I prefer my trio of brush pens. They really give me the lines I’m looking for and most importantly, they are portable! They are the top of the line of Brush/Pen hybrids.

Thanks for sharing with us Eric!
