Kaweco Sport: A Comprehensive Guide
With its sleek, attractive body, and brilliant performance, we wouldn’t be surprised if you thought the Kaweco Sport was a sports car. Born from rigorous German engineering and design in 1935 as an unassuming plastic fountain pen, it has since gained roller ball pen, ballpoint pen, and even mechanical pencil siblings.
What distinguishes the Sport line from other Kaweco product lines is its iconic octagonal shape and oversized cap. This unique design allows the pen to keep its compact, pocket shape, while acting as a full size pen when the cap is posted. The Sport is often considered a gateway pen into the fountain pen world with its approachable plastic body while including options within the line to upgrade. To see all the different iterations within the Sport line, read on.
Characteristics
Materials
The Kaweco Sport comes in several different body materials, including plastic, aluminum, and carbon fiber.
Plastic
The plastic body is lightweight, but sturdy, and is a great choice for an everyday pen.
Aluminum
The aluminum body has a lot more heft to it, so those who prefer weightier pens may prefer this material.
Carbon Fiber
Kaweco also offers an aluminum body with a genuine carbon fiber inlay for a sportier, cool look.
Body
The fountain pens and roller ball pens share the same cylindrical body with a long octagonal cap that screws on and covers most of the pen. To use the pen, unscrew the cap and post it on the back of the pen. The ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils have a similar octagonal shape and width as the cap, but are retractable rather than capped. This octagonal shape keeps the writing instrument from rolling off the table, so you can rest it on your desk securely.
Pen Type
Fountain Pen
The original Kaweco Sport was a fountain pen, and Kaweco has perfected it in both form and performance. Depending on the model, it features either a gold or silver nib. Both nibs dispense ink boldly and smoothly without skipping or bleeding, once you find the nib’s sweet spot.
Roller Ball Pen
The roller ball pen has the same body as the fountain pen, making it a good alternative to those who don’t want to deal with the finickiness of a fountain pen, but still want a nice ink flow. While not as wet as fountain pen ink, the roller ball pen features a smooth gel ink that’s vibrant and pigmented.
Ballpoint Pen
The ballpoint pen is retractable, which is excellent for people who don’t want to be bothered with a cap! The pre-installed ink is a mid-tone blue color with cool indigo hues. We recommend substituting the included refill with a higher quality D1 size refill from Japan (for example, the Sharbo X).
Mechanical Pencil
The mechanical pencil has the same retractable body as the ballpoint pen, and the clicker at the top advances the lead. All pencils use a 0.7 mm lead, which is a medium tip size that matches the wide barrel of the pencil body.
Ballpoint Pen + Stylus
The body of this ballpoint pen + stylus combo differs the most from the other Kaweco Sports. It comes with a clip (a clip is available for the other Sport pens separately), and you twist the body to rotate between the pen and the stylus. People who are constantly using their touch-screen devices will appreciate this duo.

Classic
The Classic is aptly named–it’s followed the same design since 1935. The original fountain pen’s distinctive shiny body and beautiful gold nib have been well loved by many fountain pen enthusiasts. Now with offerings in different pen types, mechancial pencils, colors, and patterns, including the popular Chess design, the Classic is a nice pick for a lightweight, everyday writing instrument.

Ice
The Ice model has a transparent plastic body that lets you see the inner workings of the pen! Engineers, artists, and researchers alike would appreciate this cool feature. What’s more, the Ice fountain pen makes a great eye-dropper converter fountain pen, because you can see the amount of ink inside. It comes in a variety of bright colors, giving it a fun, contemporary look. This model is available in fountain pen, ballpoint pen, roller ball pen, and mechanical pencil types.

AL
The AL pen is made of a sturdy aluminum that is polished with a matte finish, giving it a substantial weight and luxurious feel. It comes in classy, neutral colors, which fits perfectly in a professional setting. The AL Sport fountain pen also uses a silver nib rather than the brassy gold nib of the Classic Sport. In addition to the different pen and pencil types, this is the only line that offers the Touch Ballpoint + Stylus pen.

AL Stonewashed
Kaweco was inspired by the look of worn-in jeans when they designed the AL Stonewashed. Using the AL aluminum as a base, they then treat the pens in a special procedure that gives them a vintage, distressed look. They even come in different “washes,” just like jeans. They add personality to your pen collection, and make for great conversation starters!

AC
The AC line takes the Sport name to the next level. With real carbon fiber inlays in its aluminum body, it is the sportiest looking pen in the Sport lineup. The inlays have a three dimensional feel to them that is reminiscent of the interior of a car, adding to the pen’s cool, modern vibe. Only available as a fountain pen, the AC Sport is an excellent pick if you want some edge in your fountain pen.

Skyline
The Skyline is a modified version of the Classic Sport. In the fountain pens, instead of the traditional gold nibs, the Skyline features silver nibs. It’s available in cooler shades, such as a lovely mint, light taupe, steel gray, stark white, and hot pink. This is a great choice for those who prefer the more understated silver nib to the bolder gold nib.
